The interesting findings about the stroke-risk is that it increased across-the-board with the increase in hours-worked. No other factors played a part in these determinations such as: gender, race, age, or economic status.

Although this study seems conclusive, there were certain other considerations that were not implicated such as the participants’ family health history, cholesterol, or blood pressure, according to one medical expert.

There are so many contradictory reports these days on alcohol and its possible health benefits. For sure, heavy drinking is a health impairment, but a new study shows moderate consumption may actually reduce the risk of a stroke.

There are clinically two types of strokes. An ischemic stroke is caused by blocked blood flow to the brain. A hemorrhagic stroke is when a blood vessel breaks and bleeds into the brain.

Ischemic strokes account for about 87 percent of all strokes, according to the American Stroke Association. The research from the newest Swedish study claims that a lower risk of ischemic strokes exists when one or two drinks per day are consumed.

Unfortunately, for those light-to-moderate drinkers, the risk of hemorrhagic stroke did not decrease. However, heavy drinking (three or more per day) increases the risk of both types of strokes. The journal BMC Medicine recently published those results.

The Research Team’s Study

Researchers from England and Sweden analyzed the results of 25 separate studies. The good news was that light consumption of alcohol decreased the odds of the more potential type of stroke. Again, however, heavy drinkers were offered a warning.

Those who indulged in three or more libations daily actually became more likely to suffer a hemorrhagic stroke—even though normally (without heavy drinking), a person is actually 5 times more apt to suffer from an ischemic stroke.

The researchers suspect that it’s the way that alcohol affects the body that changes the general “stroke susceptibility” rule to date.

Drink (Lightly) and Be Merry

Indulging in beer, wine, or spirits in moderation, in general, won’t create many health conflicts. And as read, sometimes a drink or too can be beneficial. We’ve read many reports about the benefits of red wine, for example.

The concern here is that alcohol has been connected to a decrease in fibrinogen. Fibrinogen is a protein that helps the body form blood clots. This is why oftentimes we hear about those with an abundant amount of alcohol in their system—they are challenged with the ability to stop bleeding, especially when they’re injured.

It makes sense then that the risk of hemorrhagic stroke would increase with elevated levels of alcohol in the bloodstream.

No Party Poopers!

A drink or two, whether at home, during dinner, or at a celebration can be relaxing and enjoyable. Pacing oneself can be helpful. Perhaps have one cocktail and then refresh with a couple of glasses of water while socializing. Then, have your second, if you desire. Remember to stay hydrated and have food in your stomach, too.

The newest number from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 100 million adult Americans currently have diabetes or prediabetes. Diabetes can be an extremely disabling condition. Could you be on the road to developing diabetes and not know it? Or could you already be living with it and not know?

Diabetes and Prediabetes is an epidemic in the United States as well as in numerous other countries. A published study in the June 2017 New England Journal of Medicine reported that over 2 billion people in the world are overweight or obese. Diabetes, according to research collected in the U.S. in 2015, was the seventh leading cause of death. The CDC’s recent report revealed that nearly one in four adults in the U.S. do not know they even have diabetes.

Recently, the director of the CDC announced that over a third of American adults have prediabetes. “And the majority don’t know it.” It’s pretty frightening that millions and millions of people are prediabetic and are unaware of their own condition.

Migraines Linked to Heart Attack and Stroke

A recent study links women with migraines to heart attack or stroke. In fact, they are twice as likely to suffer a cardiovascular event.

In the past, a specific type of migraine headache has been linked to stroke. It’s called a “migraine with aura”, which affects one in four male or female migraine sufferers. These patients can be affected by bright light, experience vision blurriness or even distorted vision.

The results of a new preliminary study were recently presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2016. For three years, 917 women were evaluated for risk of heart disease. After a six-year follow-up, those who had suffered migraines had a 225% increased risk in a future cardiovascular event.

Study Specifics

This particular study was conducted with just female participants. Their average age was 58, and over 75% were Caucasian. One of the lead researchers, Dr. Rambarat, claimed that after factoring other risk factors, the women who had migraines were twice as likely to have cardiac problems.

Additionally, after the six-year follow-up, the increased risk of stroke turned out to be much greater than having a heart attack.

Some of the “other” risk factors were: age, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and family history of heart disease. The study doesn’t claim that migraines cause strokes. However, the connection between the two shouldn’t be ignored.

What to Do With This Information?

The data from the study can inform women with migraines and their physicians. Perhaps preventative heart disease measures should be considered. Rambarat suggests that maybe now migraines need to be regarded as a possible risk factor for future cardiovascular event.

Whether you suffer from migraines or not, it’s always a wise move to make heart-healthy choices. Even if you’re a young woman, it’s never too early to practice cardiovascular-disease prevention. Here are some suggestions:

-quit smoking; if you don’t smoke, please don’t start

-manage stress; practice what relaxes you (reading, swimming, dancing, yoga, cooking, etc.)

-eat lots of vegetables and fruits; avoid foods that lend to high cholesterol

-get rest; allow yourself eight hours per night

-avoid estrogen-based birth-control pills

What Is Heatstroke?

Heat stroke is defined as a dramatic elevation of body temperature, or hyperthermia, caused by the body’s inability to dissipate heat in extreme temperatures.

According to ABC News, certain behaviors contribute to heat-related injuries in children, including:

  • Excessive physical exertion
  • Neglecting to properly recover between bouts of physical activity
  • Improper dress

Failure to properly recover is a major concern in the United States, where children often participate in sports that require them to exercise outdoors twice in a single day with little rest time between sessions. What Is Dehydration?

Fortunately, parents’ attitudes toward their children exercising in extremely hot weather have changed. The medical community has also spread the word about the inherent dangers of playing and working outside when the temperature turns sweltering.

One of the best defenses to heat stroke and dehydration is prevention. Parents should avoid placing undue expectations on teachers or coaches to supervise their children at all times. When coaches and other adults fail to look out for the safety of the children under their control, there can be devastating consequences.

Parents can address this risk by educating their children about the signs and symptoms of heat stroke and dehydration. Kids should understand that they are allowed to take breaks as needed. Treating Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is a very serious condition. Left untreated, it can cause victims to pass away unexpectedly. As soon as you suspect your child has heat stroke, you can begin treating your child until emergency workers arrive.

  • Move the child into a cool room
  • Loosen clothing
  • Open windows to get air flowing and improve ventilation
  • Ask the child to drink some cool water
  • Cover exposed skin with cool, damp towels
  • Massage the skin to improve blood circulation
  • Cancel remaining activities

Treating Dehydration

Remedying dehydration is relatively straightforward. To help your child recover from the effects of dehydration, introduce fluids slowly. Your child might want to gulp down water, but this can actually make a bad situation worse. It is best to replace a child’s fluids with an electrolyte solution rather than pure water.

Electrolyte drinks replenish the essential vitamins lost during an episode of dehydration. Moreover, electrolytes are critical in situations where a child has experienced diarrhea or vomiting due to dehydration. Experts recommend avoiding sports drinks due to their sugar content.
